How does Acupuncture work? According to the theories of Chinese medicine, health is a function of energy circulating freely throughout the body's subtle pathways or meridians. If these pathways are blocked and circulation is impaired, pain and illness result. Stimulating acupuncture points along the meridians releases and regulates energy and restores health. Studies in the east and west have shown evidence that stimulation of acupuncture points produces physiological reactions which improve circulation, release endorphins to control pain and allow the body to heal itself quickly and completely. What should I expect from Acupuncture? What does it feel like? Acupuncture needles are solid and very thin, almost as thin as a human hair. They are often painless to the patient. Once in place, you may feel a tingling or heavy feeling where the needles are, or you may feel nothing. Most patients enjoy their acupuncture treatment and find it relaxing. Afterwards, many patients feel extremely relaxed; others feel invigorated and energized. How long will a treatment session last? The typical treatment session will last approximately 1 hour. Your first treatment will take longer, as the acupuncturist will be gathering a substantial amount of information from you in order to optimize your treatment outcomes. Once the needles are in place, you will usually rest with them in for about 20 minutes. What other modalities are provided beside acupuncture? Depending on the patient’s problem, an acupuncturist may provide other services in addition to acupuncture. For example, herbal formulas, external liniments, cupping, or massage therapy may be appropriate. Diet and exercise suggestions may also be offered as a way for the patient to contribute to the improvement of their own health and wellbeing. How many treatments will I need? The number of treatments needed will vary depending on the patient and the condition being treated. Many patients experience dramatic results from their first treatment. In some cases, a single treatment may resolve the problem. In other cases, patients feel no change immediately after their treatment, but will notice relief over the next few days. Long-term, chronic problems usually require many treatments to bring the body back into balance. What should I do to prepare for treatment? Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Make sure you have eaten something within a few hours before your treatment. Before your first treatment, bring along any information that will be helpful in understanding the history of your problem. Be sure to ask your acupuncturists any questions that may be concerning you. And most of all, relax. Is acupuncture safe? One of the advantages of acupuncture is the absence of any serious side effects. The licensed, professional acupuncturist at our clinic uses only sterile, single-use (disposable) needles. When performed by a fully trained, licensed practitioner, acupuncture is extremely safe. Is there research to support the effectiveness of acupuncture? A panel of experts convened by the National Institutes of Health concluded that acupuncture is an effective treatment for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, and nausea from pregnancy. The program for integrative medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine found acupuncture to be successful in treating hormonal imbalances, digestive disorders, arthritis pain, and insomnia. Research studies on the efficacy of acupuncture for a wide variety of health concerns are ongoing in the medical community today. |
